1 (12-ounce) package milk chocolate morsels
2 Tablespoons vegetable shortening
30 caramels
3 Tablespoons butter
2 Tablespoons water
1 cup salted dry roasted peanuts

Combine milk chocolate morsels and shortening in top of a double boiler; bring water to a boil. Reduce heat to low; cook until chocolate and shortening melt, stirring occasionally. Spread half of chocolate mixture evenly in an aluminum foil-lined 8-inch square pan. Chill 15 minutes or until firm. (Keep remaining chocolate mixture warm.)

Combine caramels, butter and water in top of a double boiler; bring water in bottom of double boiler to a boil. Reduce heat to low; cook, stirring occasionally, until smooth. Stir in peanuts; let cool slightly. Spread caramel mixture over chilled chocolate mixture. Chill 15 minutes. Spread remaining warm chocolate mixture evenly over caramel mixture. Chill 1 hour or until firm. Cut into squares. Yield: about 1¾ pounds.
