What is Bisto?

A number of my recipes call for an ingredient called Bisto. What is Bisto, you ask?

Well, it's a meat flavored gravy powder that is produced in the UK. It's been around for over 100 years, and now comes in a variety of flavors.

I use "The Original" which is a brown powder that is mixed with cold liquid that is then added to whatever you want thickened. Once the mixture begins to boil, the thickening occurs.

Bisto is a specialty type item, so it's likely that you wont find it in your supermarket. You can purchase it online or possibly at a specialty store.

If you don't have Bisto, you can always use cornstarch mixed with a cold liquid to thicken your sauce, beurre manié (a paste of equal parts of butter and flour), or a roux.
