    1. Create the Sunrise Effect: Using a pipette or small spoon, slowly add about ½ teaspoon of grenadine along the inside edge of the glass. Allow the grenadine to sink naturally. This creates the layered sunrise effect.

    Chula's Test Kitchen Tips

    • Background: My sister Sharon of Grits and Pinecones, daughter Susan, and I are offering a cooking demonstration at Brown's Kitchen in Tallahassee, the day before Easter. The theme is Easter Brunch. Initially, we wanted to serve a mimosa at the start of the demo, but due to the time of day, we were advised against serving anything alcoholic. After a lot of thought and experimentation, this Easter Morning Sunrise Sparkler was created!
    • The Orange Juice: In creating this drink, I experimented with two store-bought orange juices and freshly squeezed juice from both Navel and Valencia oranges. The juice from the Valencia oranges wasn't too bad, but the other juices tasted awful - so much so that I almost abandoned the idea. Then, I discovered Cara Cara oranges, which I ultimately used. The juice was exceptional, and its pinkish color was lovely!
    • Freshly Squeezed Juice: I ended up squeezing the juice from the Cara Cara oranges and straining it. The oranges came in 3-pound bags - each bag produced around 2 cups of amazing juice.
    • Ratio of Orange Juice to Sparkling White Grape Juice: I also experimented with different ratios of orange juice to Sparkling White Grape Juice. I didn't want to mask or dilute the exceptional taste of the Cara Cara orange juice, so I ultimately decided to use 2 ½ ounces of orange juice and 1 ½ ounces of grape juice.
    • Sunrise Effect: I used grenadine, which is readily available in grocery stores. Because it's heavier than the other liquids, it naturally drops to the bottom of the glass. The trick was to add it slowly to produce the maximum sunrise effect. I tried pouring it from the bottle, a measuring cup, a small spoon, and an eyedropper. However, none of these produced the desired effect. Ultimately, I stumbled upon pipettes from Michaels that were perfect.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use store-bought orange juice instead of Cara Cara orange juice?

Yes, but with caution. In my testing, store-bought orange juice tasted awful. However, maybe that was just my taste buds.

What can I use instead of sparkling white grape juice?

You can substitute sparkling water or lemon-lime soda. In my testing, the sparkling water tended to dilute the orange juice's taste, and the lemon-lime soda altered the drink's taste somewhat.

How do I get the layered sunrise effect?

Add the grenadine slowly along the inside edge of the glass. It will sink naturally due to its higher density.

Can I make this ahead of time?

This drink is best made just before serving. The bubbles and layered effect are freshest right after preparation.
