The History of Dole Whip
Dole Whip, the creamy pineapple soft-serve treat, has been putting smiles on the faces of Disney park guests for nearly 40 years. It all started in 1976 when Dole became the sponsor of Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room at Disneyland.
Twelve years later, in 1984, Dole Whip made its official debut at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. In 1986, this tropical frozen delight arrived at Disneyland two years later, completing its delicious destiny.
Over the years, Dole Whip has gained a massive fan following, sprouting up at various locations around the Disney parks in classic pineapple as well as other fun flavors like orange, strawberry, and mango. It’s no wonder this sweet, icy indulgence has become as iconic as Mickey ears and fireworks at the Disney parks!
Two Simple Ingredients
To make this legendary treat, you only need two simple ingredients: A 20-ounce can of pineapple chunks in pineapple juice and vanilla ice cream.
Here’s How I Made the Dole Whip – Step-by-Step Directions
- I started by draining the pineapple juice from the pineapple chunks. I measured ยฝ cup of the pineapple juice and used the remaining pineapple juice for another purpose. I placed the pineapple chunks in a single layer on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper and put the pineapple chunks into the freezer.
- Once the pineapple chunks were frozen, I added them to my blender along with the ยฝ cup of pineapple juice and vanilla ice cream.
- I secured the top of the blender and started processing the ingredients on the highest blender setting. After about 5 seconds, the blender stopped blending because the mixture was too frozen.
- I removed the top and scraped down the sides with a silicone spatula. Then, I let the mixture sit to thaw enough to blend freely. This took about 30 minutes.
I let the blender run for about two minutes to ensure that no bits of pineapple remained. Because I was going to pipe the Dole Whip, I wanted to ensure that the piping tip didn’t get clogged with bits of pineapple.
- After two minutes, the mixture was well pureed but was too liquidy to pipe. Therefore, I transferred it to a freezer-safe container and placed it in the freezer for about 30 minutes until it reached a pipable consistency.
- Once the Dole Whip reached a pipable consistency, I transferred it to a piping bag fitted with a 1M star tip.
I piped the Dole Whip into an ice cream dish and garnished it with a piece of pineapple. It was refreshingly delicious.
You can whip up a batch of this iconic Disney treat with just a blender, some vanilla ice cream, and a can of pineapple chunks in pineapple juice. It’s the perfect way to beat the heat on a warm summer day or satisfy your Dole Whip cravings until your next trip to the happiest place on Earth. Yum!
Frequently Asked Questions
The can of pineapple chunks and juice contained a full cup of pineapple juice. I tried adding the entire can, but the mixture was too soupy to work. However, the whole can of pineapple could be used if you want a pineapple smoothie or a Dole Whip float.
You can make a delicious dairy-free version of Dole Whip at home using frozen pineapple, pineapple juice, and coconut milk.
A food processor would work well for this recipe.
You can use various fruits such as strawberries, raspberries, mangoes, peaches, and bananas. These can be used either in combination with pineapple or as a substitute.
Recipe Tips and Tricks
- Whenever I make Dole Whip, I need to freeze the blended mixture in an airtight container for 30 to 40 minutes to achieve the iconic swirl before transferring it to a pastry bag fitted with a 1M star tip. During this time, stirring the mixture every 10 to 15 minutes is important to prevent ice crystals from forming.
- I’ve made this using store-bought frozen pineapple chunks. Maybe it’s the brand, but I find the frozen pineapple chunks somewhat more fibrous than the canned ones.
- I’ve not made this using canned sliced pineapple, but I suspect it would work fine.

Easy Disney-Inspired Dole Whip
Equipment
- Blender or Food Processor with Steel Blade
- Piping bag with 1M Star Tip
Ingredients
- 2 ยฝ cups can pineapple chunks with pineapple juice (See Tip 1)
- ยพ cup vanilla ice cream
Instructions
- Drain pineapple juice from the pineapple chunks. Reserve ยฝ cup of the pineapple juice for the Dole Whip and use the remainder for another purpose.
- Spread the pineapple chunks in a single layer on a parchment-lined sheet pan; freeze the pineapple chunks.
- Add the frozen pineapple chunks, ยฝ cup of the pineapple juice, and ice cream to a blender. Secure the top and blend at high speed until the mixture is no longer blending because it's too frozen, about 5 seconds. Scrape down the sides of the blender, and let the mixture thaw until it blends freely about 30 minutes. Once the mixture blends freely, blend at high speed for two minutes or until no pineapple bits remain.
- Transfer to a freezer-safe container, and freeze for 30 to 40 minutes or until the mixture is pipable. (See Tip 2)
- Transfer the mixture to a piping bag fitted with a 1M star tip. Pipe mixture into serving containers.
- Yield: 2 servings.

Tips/Notes
- Rather than using canned pineapple chunks in juice, you can use 2 cups of frozen pineapple and ยฝ cup of pineapple juice.
- As the mixture freezes, ice crystals will likely form around the bowl’s perimeter. Therefore, every 10 to 15 minutes, remove the mixture from the freezer and stir it to minimize the formation of the ice crystals. The reason is that the ice crystals may clog the piping tip, making the piping of the Dole Whip difficult.
