My inspiration for making this came from Grits and Pinecone's Easy Sausage Cheese Bread. I still remember how awesome the Sausage Cheese Bread was and couldn't wait to make it myself. This easy crescent roll recipe is insanely delicious.

    Ingredients- Here's What You'll Need

I made this awesome dish using the following simple ingredients: refrigerated original crescent roll dough, sausage, and Monterey Jack Cheese.

Ingredients for Sausage & Cheese Crescent Ring

    Steps - Making the Filling

    1. As a first step, I cooked the sausage in a 12-inch nonstick skillet over medium heat, crumbling it as it cooked. Once all of the pink was gone from the sausage, I transfered it to a paper towel-lined plate to allow the grease to drain off.
    Cooking the Sausage
    1. After allowing the cooked sausage to come to room temperature, I transferred it to a large bowl and proceeded to the second step, adding shredded Monterey Jack Cheese. Then, I mixed the sausage and cheese together until they were well blended. That's it for the filling!

    Mixing Cheese and Sausage Together

Steps - Forming the Sausage & Cheese Crescent Ring

    1. I started by unrolling the crescent roll dough. Then, I separated the dough into 16 triangles.
    1. I placed an inverted 5-inch bowl in the center of a silicone-lined half-sheet baking pan. You could also have lined the baking sheet with parchment paper.

Next, I overlapped the long ends of the dough triangles around the bowl, with the pointed ends facing out, so they looked like a sun! After all the triangles were placed, I removed the small bowl from the center.

    Forming Circle with Crescent Dough
    1. I used a medium-sized ice cream scoop to carefully place the sausage/cheese mixture on the part of each triangle closest to the center. Then, I brought the long end of the triangles up over the filling and tucked them under the bottom layer of the dough.

Finishing the Sausage & Cheese Crescent Ring

Once the sausage/cheese mixture was enclosed with the crescent roll dough, I brushed it with an egg wash. Sometimes, I'll sprinkle on some shredded parmesan cheese.

Then, I baked the ring in a preheated 375°F oven for about 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, the cheese was fully melted, and the crescent ring was a golden brown.

I removed it from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for about 5 minutes. Then, I transferred it to a cutting board for serving.

Transferring Sausage Ring to Cutting Board

The Sausage and Cheese Crescent Ring was amazing with its ooey-gooey cheese and spicy sausage. I added some salsa for an extra bite, and could have also used sour cream for dipping. Yum!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can you substitute a different cheese for the Monterey Jack Cheese?

I also like to use mozzarella cheese and cheddar cheese in this recipe.

What type of sausage is used in this recipe?

I used Jimmy Dean's hot sausage but could have also used a good regular pork breakfast sausage.

Can this recipe be adapted for other crescent roll ring recipes?

Try making a crescent roll taco ring or converting it into an Italian sausage ring recipe for a variation on this delicious recipe. Also, for an easy crescent breakfast recipe, consider adding scrambled eggs to the sausage mixture for a sausage egg crescent ring. All three are awesome.

    Ingredients

    • 1 pound Sausage (See Tip 1)
    • 2 8 ounce cans Refrigerated Crescent Rolls
    • 1 ½ cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese (See Tip 2)
    • Egg wash, optional (See Tip 3)

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 375°F.
    • Brown and crumble sausage in a large skillet over medium heat. Drain on paper towels and allow to come to room temperature.
    • Combine cooked sausage and cheese in a bowl. Set aside.
    • Open cans of crescent dough; separate into 16 triangles. Place a 5-inch inverted bowl in the center of a silicone-lined baking sheet. Arrange the overlapping triangles with long ends against the bowl and pointed ends facing out. The ring should look like a sun.
    • Remove the bowl. Spoon the sausage/cheese mixture around the center of the ring. Bring each dough triangle up over the filling, tucking the dough under to secure it. Repeat around the ring until the entire filling is enclosed. Brush the ring with egg wash, if desired.
    • Bake in preheated 375°F oven for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown. Remove from oven; allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving.
    • Yield: 8 servings. (See Tips 4 and 5)

    Tips/Notes

    1. I used Jimmy Dean Hot Sausage, but any good sausage will work here. For variety, try Italian Sausage!
    2. For variety, you can also use mozzarella cheese.
    3. I made the egg wash by whisking together an egg with one tablespoon of water.
    4. Leftovers, if any, can be refrigerated and reheated in a 350°F oven for about 10 minutes.
    5. Once you get the hang of making this crescent roll dish, you can experiment with different variations. For example, I already mentioned using Italian sausage and mozzarella cheese. You could also use taco meat, cheddar cheese, ham and Swiss cheese, etc.

          Toni,

I've not tried assembling the sausage and cheese crescent ring the night before, but I think that it would work if you wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or place it in an airtight container to prevent the dough from drying out. I would remove it from the refrigerator 15 to 20 minutes before you're ready to bake it, and then add about 5 minutes to the baking time.

I'd love to know if this works for you.

          Chula

          Tammy,

Do you know if she uses a block of cream cheese in place of the Monterey Jack cheese or in addition to the Monterey Jack cheese?

This looked so good I couldn’t wait to try it! I didn’t have all the ingredients so I made these substitutions.
Only had one can of crescent rolls- made a smaller ring. Fed 3 hungry people.
Only had pepper jack cheese- good substitute,
No sausage (geez come on!) used bacon .
Added scrambled eggs. It was so good! I can’t wait to try out your recipe the way it was written

In addition to my last comment, I sautéed 1/2 a vidalia onion with the sausage.

Double YUM on both or your suggestions, i.e., cream cheese and sautéed Vidalia onion. I'm definitely going to try this the next time the I make the sausage and cheese crescent ring.
